Is Your Teen Ready to Hit the Highway

Pennsylvania Teen Driving Laws Every Parent Needs to Know

Getting their driver’s license is every teenager’s dream come true. However, their parents might not be sharing their excitement.

If your teen is about to receive their license, it’s important to familiarize yourself with Pennsylvania’s teen driving laws. Additionally, it’s essential to get any auto repairs your car may need to keep your child safe on the road.

The certified mechanics at Kindermans Auto Repair in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, is here to talk about the top teen driving laws you should know about.

Getting Their Driver’s Permit

Before getting an official license, your teen needs to obtain their learner’s permit. They must be at least 16 years of age and undergo a physical examination by a doctor. Once at the DMV, they will undergo an eye screening and driving knowledge test. Once they pass, your teen can receive their permit, which is valid for one year.

Obtaining a Pennsylvania Driver’s License

Once your teen has completed at least 65 hours of driving and after a six-month period, they can get their license. The 65 hours must include 10 hours of nighttime driving and five hours of driving in bad weather.

Teen Driving Laws

If your child is under the age of 18, they must abide by the following Pennsylvania state driving laws:

  • No driving between 11pm and 5am, unless accompanied by a parent or guardian
  • Teens driving without a parent cannot have more than one passenger under the age of 18
  • As part of Pennsylvania’s Zero Tolerance Law, they cannot drive intoxicated
